Sorrowful Mysteries
The Agony of Our Lord in the Garden
Then
Jesus came with them to a plot of land called Gethsemane; and he
said to his disciples, 'Stay here while I go other there to pray.'
He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him. And he began
to feel sadness and anguish. Then he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful
to the point of death. Wait here and stay awake with me.'
-- Matthew 26:36-39
Our Lord is Scourged at the Pillar
Then
he released Barabbas for them. After having Jesus scourged he handed
him over to be crucified.
-- Matthew 27:26
Our Lord is Crowned with Thorns
Then
the governor's soldiers took Jesus with them into the Praetorium
and collected the whole cohort round him. And they stripped him and
put a scarlet cloak around him, and having twisted some thorns into
a crown they put this on his head and placed a reed in his right
hand. To make fun of him they knelt to him saying, 'Hail, king of
the Jews!' And they spat on him and took the reed and struck him
on the head with it.
--Matthew 27:27-31
Our Lord Carries the Cross to Calvary
On
their way out, they came across a man from Cyrene, called Simon,
and enlisted him to carry his cross.
-- Matthew 27:32
The Crucifixion of Our Lord
After
this, Jesus knew that everything had now been completed and, so
that the scripture should be completely fulfilled, he said; 'I
am thirsty'. A jar full of sour wine stood there; so, putting a
sponge soaked in the wine on a hyssop stick, they held it up to
his mouth. After Jesus had taken the wine he said ' It is fulfilled';
and bowing his head he gave up his spirit.
-- John 19:28-30
